"Out Of Control" Producer DAVID WOLFERT intervie

Another cool interview from Sakis Nikas

DAVID WOLFERT

(Producer of “Out Of Control”)

Rockpages.gr: First of all, how did you get to work for Peter Criss' "Out Of Control" record?

David Wolfert: I was introduced to the project by Vini Poncia, who had worked with Kiss and also produced Peter's first solo project.

Rockpages.gr: You co-wrote several tracks on the album, including "By Myself", "I Found Love" and "My Life". Would you like to tell us something about these songs?

David Wolfert: "By Myself" and "My Life" were written because I felt we needed to speak about Peter's situation more specifically- on his own for the first time in a long while.

Rockpages.gr: You also played guitar, synths and you arranged the strings. What do you remember from the recording sessions? Do you have any stories to share with us?

David Wolfert: Peter and Stan Penridge had an existing band, which played most of the record. I only added my playing after the fact, when I felt something was missing. Also, I had a lot more experience in the studio than any of the band members (except Peter), so it was often easier to play what I was hearing rather than describe it. The string sessions were great because they were a real departure from Peter's past recordings.

Rockpages.gr: "Out Of Control" was Peter Criss' first album after his departure from KISS. Was there any pressure to come up with a really strong musical effort?

David Wolfert: I think Peter really felt it was his chance to prove to the world that he could stand on his own musically.

Rockpages.gr: What do you remember from Peter Criss. What's the one thing that stands out in your mind about him?

David Wolfert: I remember how determined he was to make a great record,. I think there are moments on the record that lived up to his expectations.

Rockpages.gr:Your co-producer was the late Stan Penridge. Did you get to work together on this project or did you work separately?

David Wolfert: I did not know Stan had passed away until I read your email. How sad. We worked together pretty closely; He was already working with Peter when I come into the project.

Rockpages.gr: The album's musical direction was an idea that Peter Criss and Stan Penridge had or did you have any input on this?

David Wolfert: Peter and Stan had a somewhat looser vision of the album. I tried to toughen and tighten it up a little and make a more coherent sound in the writing, playing and recording. I also felt that they might have been lacking some depth in the song choices, so I brought them the Rascal's song (ed. note “You Better Run”) and introduced three or four other songs to them.
